William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
In this interview upon return from a year's travel in South America and Africa, Muir predicts that "The time will come when this region [Amazon basin] will be transformed into one of the richest garden spots of the earth. . . ." Realizing the gigantic obstacles that would have to be surmounted, Muir continues: "It will not come until the other people of the world get hungry and look about them for a region sufficiently rich to satisfy their wants. When that time comes the inexhaustible riches of the Amazon Valley will be discovered and the whole region will be developed to an extent that is inconceivable now."
