William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
Muir is questioned about the "Nature-faking controversy,'' to which he replies: "What is the use of trying to prove that animals have souls or reason? l believe they have myself, and that we are all kin with them. No one can study dogs and domestic animals nor observe wild ones without realizing that they possess character; the distance between them and humanity may be large, but to me it is only a question of distance; but as to controversy on such a subject, it would be valueless."
