William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
Muir regales the students with his adventures of ""meeting grizzlies, being without food for three or four days at a time, riding down the mountain side on the crest of avalanches, etc."" The writer observes that ""Prof. Muir is such a lover of the mountains that he maintains they have great efficacy in purifying and strengthening the character. He considers the people of Pasadena very fortunate in having the Sierra Madre range within such easy reach and thinks they ought to visit it often without extra inducement of a railway to pull them up."" Pencilled in Muir's handwriting on the side of the clipping is, ""Lectured twice in one day and still alive!""
