William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
In a discussion of the work of glaciers in ""moulding the landscape,"" Muir states: ""North of latitude 56 deg., . . . glaciers become rarer, until finally they disappear entirely, although the cold increases as you go further north. Thus it will be seen that the formation of a glacier depends not only upon the snow for its life, but that a vast amount of heat is necessary just as well. The average rate of motion for glacial movement is about one inch each day."" In concluding his lecture, Muir relates his experience of a ride on an avalanche and of an earthquake in Yosemite in 1872. Throop Institute later became the California Institute of Technology.
