William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
Richard F. Fleck gathers all of the writings on North American Indians to be found in the several books by Muir, as well as those in The Life and Letters. . . and John of the Mountains . . . , to delineate the theme of his article, ""John Muir's Evolving Attitudes Toward Native American Cultures."" The author aptly notes Muir's negative impressions and chronicles their change to those of respect and admiration for the Indian's beliefs and native lifestyle. Fleck compares Muir's evolving attitudes on Indians with those of Thoreau and finds great similarity. Sources of the excerpts are listed in the Notes.
