William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
The Sierra Club, recognizing the value of John Muir's ""Studies in the Sierra,"" and wishing to make them available to the wider audience that they deserved, reprinted them in this book. In the dedication the book honors not only John Muir, but also William E. Colby, who writesthe preface and the introduction. The studies originally appeared in The Overland Monthly in 1874 and 1875 and were reprinted in the Sierra Club Bulletin, from 1915 to 1921. For first appearance, see: no. 24; no. 26; nos. 28 and 29; no. 33; no. 39.
