William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
Following a biographical sketch of Muir by the editor, the selections from Muir's writing, pages 3-115, are arranged not only to describe the Yosemite country, but also to give an account of Muir's exploration of it as well as his sensitive appreciation of its unique beauty. The source of each selection is given in a footnote, listing book without pagination. Adams, in his brief introduction, states that it is his conviction that the combination of photograph and writing "creates a statement of greater intensity than either word or image alone." The truth of this is brilliantly illustrated in the photographic section in which an appropriate Muir quotation accompanies each photograph. Following the photographic data, the sources of Muir's quotations are listed, pages 131-132.
