William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
A reprint from John of the Mountains. . . by Linnie Marsh Wolfe, no. 379, pp. 205-207. Cornelius erroneously includes this storm story as part of the saga of the Swett-McChesney-Keith trip with Muir in June, 1875. He took the information from a footage (p. 205) in which Mrs. Wolfe presumed the incident was a part of the June, 1875, camping trip, "although found elsewhere with no year date." This stormy boat trip on Mono Lake did take place in 1875, but it was during Muir's excursion with George B. Bayley sometime in late July. This is substantiated by Bayley's reminiscences of the experience, published in the Stockton Daily Independent, December 21, 1878 (see no. 492, pp. 88-91). Muir's dramatic account of the windstorm on Mono Lake did not appear in any of Muir's Bulletin letters or later publications.
