William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
In writing for publication, Muir found it difficult to express himself to his complete satisfaction. Whatever he wrote, he almost always reworked and edited, often several times. The unpublished journals, jotted down for his own reflection and use, record Muir's first impressions and spontaneous enthusiasms without benefit of refinement, and thus reveal an intimate understanding of him that can be gained in no other way. Often, a comparison of a description or incident written in a journal with that of the published account can give an insight into the process by which Muir arrived at his finished product. These gleanings from his journals are arranged chronologically and become, in a sense, a biographical account in which one can discern Muir's development through the various phases of his career. This book is important to Muir scholars and is essential to any analytical study of the man and his writings.
