William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
As in no. 341, this publication was produced in the Private Library Department, and no records are available. It was sold by subscription only. In the set we examined, there is a publisher's engraved certificate inserted in volume one which reads: "This Copy Of The Sierra Edition of John Muir Supplied to George W. Allen is One of the First Impressions. Houghton Mifflin Company. April 18, 1918. Publishers." This indicates that the set was not available until 1918, although the date on the first six volumes is 1917. Since Steep Trails, volume 8, was not published until September, 1918, this volume could not have been added to the set until late fall of that year. Mark Van Doren reviewed an eight-volume set in The Nation, April 22, 1922. The set was listed at $20.00, an advance over the original price; however, this may have been for the set described in no. 353.
