William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
In a published telegram to Robert Underwood Johnson, Muir states: "Hetch Hetchy situation critical. City [San Francisco] trying to rush bill through Congress speciously, urging imperative necessity, which does not exist. Send strong wires and letters to Public Lands Committee of the House requesting delay until regular session. We are preparing important data to present to regular session." The message is signed: "J. M.-Pres. Society for the Preservation of National Parks." Appended is a brief explanation of why Hetch Hetchy Valley should be saved from "spoliation."
