William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
At Muir's request, the Houghton Mifflin Company pre-published the book The Story of My Boyhood and Youth serially in an abridged form, in four issues of The Atlantic Monthly (letter, CStoC). In this first portion, Muir recalls: "When I was a boy in Scotland I was fond of everything that was wild, and all my life I've been growing fonder of wild places and wild creatures." Muir continues with his first recollections of life in Dunbar to the announcement of his father one evening: "Bairns...you needna learn your lessons for the nicht, for we're gan to American the morn!"
