William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

This essay is a reprint of chapter VII of no. 237. American Fields and Forests was apparently published without Muir's knowledge. In a letter to Muir from the Houghton Mifflin Company, May 14, 1909, and explanation is given: "The book was put together very hastily in the hope of securing an order for it from one of the western reading circles .... "The letter continues," ... we thought it better, therefore, not to write about the undertaking until we could say something at once definite and pleasing with regard to it. We are happy now to say that we have succeeded .... "BAL indicates that there were 5,100 copies in the third printing, May 24, 1909, for "The Reading Circle."
