William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

This publication is the first version and the first appearance of Stickeen, considered to be one of the world's great dog-classics. Muir had his adventure with Stickeen in 1880 at Taylor Bay, considerably to the left of the entrance to Glacier Bay. Over the intervening years he wrote and rewrote the story, always being urged by his friends to get it into print. On the endsheets and flyleaves of several Waverly novels and other books in Muir's library are scribbled portions of the story, often variations of the same episode. Muir continued to work on the story until it finally appeared in book form in 1909 (no. 281.).
