William and Maymie Kimes Annotation
""The glaciers are the pass-makers, and it is by them that the courses of all mountaineers are predestined. ... The scenery of all the passes, especially at the head, is of the very wildest and grandest description. ... Every pass, however, possesses treasures of beauty all its own, and the finding of these is one of the mountaineer's exceeding great rewards."" After giving a comprehensive overview of the principal east-west passes, Muir then recounts the ""treasures of beauty"" awaiting the traveler over Mono Pass. A revised version of no. 30 is included on pages 646-652.
