""Imperial Japan Edition"" limited to 100 copies: 10 boxed parts, each enclosed in a 3/4 brown leather portfolio with satin sides and brown silk ties on top and sides. Illus.: in each part are 12 removable plates on Japan vellum, some signed by the artist: etchings, photogravures, ""photo-etchings""; in each part are also 6 removable etchings printed on satin. In the text are halftone illus. We examined set no. 28 at the California Historical Society. The versos of most of the Japan vellum plates read: ""Artist-Proof Edition/ Picturesque California/Artist ............ /Subject ............ /Engraver. ........... /Copyright 1888/By J. Dewing Publishing Co. /New York and San Francisco."" Not all are filled in. At the back of Part 10 is the title page: Picturesque California: The Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Slope . ... New York and San Francisco: J. Dewing Publishing Company n. d.[ c. 1888]; also ""Contents"" and ""List of Plates"" for each part. Muir's contributions are as in no. 167.
