Abstract
Human actions impact other species, primarily by altering habitats. Worldwide, nearly 10 percent of the land area is in protected status. The four articles here illustrate the range of policy design and administrative challenges involved in protecting species and habitats. These wicked problems revolve around the creation and management of spatially defined protected "places," a focus requiring more attention in public policy and public administration communities.
