Introduction/Context/Diagnosis
Summary of Project The trip took place Jan 1st - 5th 2024. The team consisted of one 3rd year and two second-year leaders, four faculty, and nine 3rd year students. On the first day of clinic, the group was split in half. The first half of the group went into the village and brought groceries to the families there. For each family that was provided groceries, the students also did OHI with them and spoke about the importance of oral health. The second half organized and set up the clinic to allow for a smooth workflow for the duration of the trip. On Tuesday through Friday, the team was in the clinic providing prophys, fillings, extractions, and root canal treatments. Patients were triaged each morning, which included reviewing a basic medical history with the patient, taking their blood pressure, determining their chief concern, and taking the necessary radiographs. Students would then consult with a faculty what the treatment plan for the respective patient would be and get the patient’s consent. After addressing the patient’s chief complaint, if there were remaining recommended procedures left on the treatment plan, the patients were seen for a second time once all the other patients were seen once and if time was permitted. Significance This trip we saw approximately 100 patients during the course of the trip. The team was able to provide approximately 34 cleanings, 56 extractions, 114 fillings, 11 root canals, and 1 post placement.
