Resin-Bonded Fixed Dental Prosthesis

Introduction/Context/Diagnosis
This is a clinical case demonstrating an alternative to traditional fixed dental prostheses or single-tooth implant placement. The patient presented with a missing #24 and a mandibular resorbed edentulous ridge without adequate buccal-lingual width to place an implant at the site. Patient was presented with the option of either a ridge augmentation surgery in order to place an implant or a resin-bonded fixed dental prosthesis. Patient opted for the later given the involvement of each procedure, timing, and financial considerations.
Methods/Treatment Plan
Minimally invasive preparation design on the mesial, lingual, and distal surfaces of #23 with a planned pontic in place of #24. A wax-up was prepared of the lingual portion of #23 and a full contour wax-up of #24. Wax-up and master cast were sent in to the lab for CAD CAM processing and fabrication of the final prosthesis using layered Zirconia. Final prosthesis was bonded to #23. Oral hygiene instructions were reviewed to ensure the patient was aware on how to best care for the prosthesis.
Results/Outcome
After seating, the final prosthesis involved a stable bond with #23. The prosthesis provided improved function, form, and esthetics for the patient. Patient was happy with the result.
Significance/Conclusions
Resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses offer a stable and effective alternative to traditional fixed dental prostheses and implant placement. Patients who may have virgin adjacent teeth, inadequate bone, or have not completed growth may benefit from resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses. Although the method may require greater technical detail with regards to the preparation design and adhesive bonding technique, it is a minimally invasive and reliable option for many patients.
