Description
Teacher advocacy for students who develop English proficiency means taking action on their behalf beyond normal teaching. This kind of advocacy responds to the reality that developing bilingualism and multilingualism in learning English often occurs within larger sociopolitical contexts that do not adequately support such language development in schools. Teacher advocacy in language teaching confronts and responds to inequities and occurs in or beyond classrooms and as individual or collective action. Such advocacy in schools and in TE programs may ensure that English learners have access to needed resources, effective instruction, and appropriate assessments. Teacher advocacy also works to secure support beyond the classroom, from school and district leadership, through links with families and community networks and, when possible, through engagement with government policy makers.
