1858. Jan. 1. Friday. "Happy New Year," "happy new year," is sounding all around me, and the best wishes of many kind friends are being expressed, on this, the first day of the New Year. O that it may prove a year of happiness to us all. But, in order that it may be suck, we must each exert ourselves to make it so. Why should it be less happy to me than the past one has been? Our Heavenly Father may, in his wisdom, send sorrow and affliction upon us. But the Christian's hope will triumph even over death and the grave, and make all the dark clouds show their "silver lining." That my dear friends and myself may possess this hope, is my earnest prayer. This New Year finds me sick in bed, with a little new-born treasure by my side. Our little daughter is but two weeks old, and I am not yet able to sit up. But my dear sister Susan has just arrived from our New England home, and today has commenced taking charge of the house hold affairs. Mrs. Shackford, who has been staying with us for two weeks past, leaves us today for her own home, unless she concludes to stop for a day or two in the neighborhood. Our family now consists of nine persons - Mr. & Mrs. Read, who will stop here until they can find some other situation, Sister Susan, George Leper a hired man, Dr. and myself, Robert, Luther and little sissy. Our small house is filled almost to overflowing, but we do not expect to be so crowded long. Cousin Augusta and Mr. Read have been married but a few days. May their happiness in married life be unalloyed. Our little boy is now one year, eight months, and two weeks old - a fine healthy child. Father Locke is still quite feeble, and confined to the house. He stays at the other house, and Bro. George takes care of him. We certainly commence the year in very happy circumstances. May they continue to be so. Temperature at Sun Rise. 40. 2 P.M. 61. Sunset 50.
