The first chapter of a book is often the most important. Agents, publishers, and contests will judge your manuscript based upon it. Many will not read on if they are not intrigued. Study and discuss some techniques for opening strong—including how to set the scene and introduce your major characters—through several model texts.

David Hagerty is working on a series of three political mysteries. The first, They Tell Me You Are Wicked, came out in August 2015, and the sequel, They Tell Me You Are Crooked, is set for release in August of this year. David has also published more than a dozen short stories online and in print, including one in Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine that was nominated for a Derringer Award.
