Last afternoon observed a long oval hill of grey vesicular lava forming divide between two forks of Big Creek [ ] [in] many places into cliffs & boulder heaps of larger dimensions. In one place on top of ridge observed lava [ ] & [pebbles] [smoothly] water washer resting in lava [in] [site] [ ] of [lava] distinctly stratified. At least 200 ft [drop] 3 [miles] long 1 broad [trending] towards [ ] [Mts] E of Mt Raymond

7 with tuneful brooks through flower gardens filled with blooming exotics & fields of luxuriant alfalfa While every sound & [aspect] of the place

Campfire The [glories] of the mtneer [mountaineer] campfire are far [greater] [than] [many] guessed One makes his own day [ ] back the [sun] [lucked] [soft] in [ ] as if for that [very] purpose One can then [make] day of [any] [size] & regulate the rising & setting of his own sun & the brightness of its [shinning] You gaze [around][at] the [illumined] [trees] as if [never] [saw] [trees] before How [marvelously] the [plumy] [fronds] of the fir show out their beauty As if [tree] with [fern] for branches & each grass & [daisy] Now the attention is [ ] May be [seen] for what [they] are then slender [ ]
