Abstract/Artist Statement

The concept of the pin up first started as a means for women to finally express their once repressed sexuality. Women were finally able to liberate themselves from the household sphere they had long been kept in. Today, the pin up style is coming back. Clothing from the 1940s and 1950s are becoming more popular for many groups all over Europe and the United States. The theme has changed very little though. The sexual liberation is still the main concept behind the style. Modern pin up should push for new changes as it did originally. This project was meant to showcase women of various body types and backgrounds still dressed in 40s and 50s style, but posing doing traditionally masculine things. Women in masculine jobs and sports are often looked at as weak links in the work force, but this is just not the case. A person's gender should not determine their qualifications, their skills should. Each model was told to pick out a masculine activity and a costume from a large collection of clothing. They were all encouraged to choose something they felt comfortable wearing. After the hair, makeup, outfit, props, and setting were all set up, the volunteer models got to pose however they liked. The product was a set of much more honest and free photographs of women as they wished to be seen.
