Chicago, May 26, 1893.
My dear Helen,

Papa feels just hungry to see his dear little love girl. And it will not be very long before I do see you, for I am coming back and I am going to bring you something nice from Scotland. Willie has gone to Mew York where Mr. Johnson is, and I am going there too in a few days, and then he is sure to be all the time talking about you.
I suppose Elfie is well and as funny as ever and does not know that I am in Chicago, or care.
I'm glad you like the music box and keep it playing nice tunes. Chicago is bigger than Martinez and San Francisco. I suppose the strawberries are fine now, and the cherries are about ripe, but you must not eat too many, and I know you will not. Mrs. Sellers says, "How is that dear little Helen?" You know she is the lady who sent you the nice story book. And now I must go to the fair and I'll think of you all day. I have your picture and Wanda's in my pocket so that I can take it out and look at it any time. I send you, my dear Helen, a lot of kisses and love you dearly.

Your own loving papa,

John Muir.
