My Dear Sir:

It is our custom to print sketches of the recipient of honorary derees each year: and, to ensure accuracy, we ask these gentlemen to furnish the necessary biographical data. I shall be much obliged, therefore, if you will send as soon as possible an account of yourself, covering, among other points (1) date and place of birth; (2) education; (3) profession or occupation; (4) publications; (5) degrees or titles received, etc.

02112

I take pleasure in mailing to you a copy of the magazine in which the last year's sketches will give you an idea of the length and form usually adopted.

I am, Sir,

Sincerely yours

Wm. R. Thayer

To Prof. John Muir.

Portage Wisconsin

June 28, 1896.

My dear Johnson.

I reached Portage in time for mothers funeral & all was done under the the most satisfactory auspices. Mother was beautiful in life & death & she suffered little or not at all, the natural sleep of weariness gradually deepening into the sleep of death. It was very fortunate that I was called east & so was led to her side when she

most longed to see me You have been my good angel, & have fairly crowded & compacted the days in New York with good things [illegible], Burroughs, Osbornes & best of all Yourself.
Heaven bless you.
I hope to meet Sargent at Chicago on July 3d Am now trying to comfort my sisters & settling business affairs. Remember me to Mrs. Johnson.

Ever yours

John Muir
