My dear Mr Muir.

I can hardly express the glow of appreciation which filled me as I unfolded the wrappings which disclosed "The Mountains of California."
I shut my eyes for a moment, and all I could say was, "how delightful," and as I read the superscription "how kind of Mr Muir"--"Oh Tom there is a treat in store for us," and already my husband comes to me with gems culled from the pages he has read--and feels that never

were truths, and impressions, more exquisitely conveyed. I have at present such a life of [illegible] duties I am compelled to take from him, except now and then I will sit and hold the book for a few minutes, get a little snatch and lay it away lest it beguile me from duties which are an incessant demand upon me at this Season.
Happy indeed are the memories of one sojourn among the Mountains and at Chico and during these many years they have constantly come back to me as among the most blessed.

Accept my dear Mr Muir my warmest thanks for this precious book. I feel myself anew your debtor for being again so closely brought into sympathy with that which is so exquisitely beautiful and ennobling.
Very soon I will be able to resign myself to the full emjoyment of the "Mountains of California."
My husband desires me to send you his regards, and unite his thanks with mine. We are both lovers of Nature, and on afternoons in Spring & Summer and often Winter are passed in Driving. We seek
