Mr. John Muir;
Dear Sir;
I hoped to see you last evening to ask of you in person what I now proceed to ask by letter.
There is to be a "Club evening" at the University Club on the 26th. Would it be possible for you to read a paper then on such topic as you please? I know it is a great favor to ask, but perhaps you have something laid away which would serve the purpose with slight trouble to yourself.

My dear Muir:-
I have just said good-bye to our Mr. Drake, superintendent of the Art Department of The Century, who is leaving for Portland and Alaska. He expects to reach Portland on the 7th of September and to take the steamer from Tacoma on the 10th. At Portland he will visit Mr. C.E.S. Wood, late Lieutenant U.S.A. He has with him an artist, also named Drake, who will illustrate your "Alaska Trip," and perhaps make some figure pictures for the "Glacier Bay." I don't suppose you are likely to be going toward Alaska at this time, but if you should be it would be very fortunate for Drake and for the articles.
He expects to be later in San Francisco and will let you know of his coming, as I have given him your address. I don't know how much you saw of him here, but he is a gentleman and an excellent fellow and good company. He said something about Yosemite, but I do not know whether he will get there. He will probably return by the southern route, Grand Cañon to
