Dr. E.[illegible] Abbott, PresidentH.A. Greene, Vice-president[illegible] Woodcock, SecretaryDr. Lorne Graham, [illegible] SecretaryMonterey Peninsula Botanical SocietyPacific Grove, CaliforniaDec. 4th 1914.Mr. John Muir:-I write to thank you for your letter which will doubtless be helpful in the campaign to have the Cypress groves placed in the care of U.S. officials.A man who has done so much for his generation as you have cammands respectful consideration and his opinions carry weight.I am pleased to say that our Santa Lucia Fir is being properly protected; for about all of them are within the Monterey Forest Reserve, where much has been done in the way of fire protection.I believe I have located all of the Venustas and have found that there are a great many more of them than was supposed: Jepson has the data.Mr. Max Walton, City Forester of San Diego, informs me that the unique Torry pine is being protected.I do not think we will have much difficulty in having the government take over the Cypress groves, but I do know that other propositions have been refused.Should you think of any way to help our movement along kindly do so: its is your affair as much as mine.I have always wanted to know you personally and have promised myself that I would seek you at your home: so far, other than reading your books, I have only met your brother, who has a home here.Already I have received many valuable letters, both from our own country but from abroad one good one being from your native land. I will get one from Sir James Lourie, Murthy Castle, Perthshire.Sincerely yours,[ilegible]05894
