My dear old friend,
Welcome home again, and very glad was I to see your familiar handwriting once more. Thanks, too, for your hearty invitation to come and get acquainted with Mrs. Muir. I shall be happy to call at Martinez on my way to the mountains -- probably within a month. I am out of school now and expect to go down to spend a few days with Mrs. Gaskill in two or three weeks.
I started on a similar errand in June, intending to come to Martinez, but only went as far as San Rafael and felt too miserable to go on a visiting tour, and so returned to Bolinas where I haveremained all summer. My health is about as usual, that is that most of the time I can endure a good deal of rambling and riding around, but right down labor uses me up pretty soon. Yes, I am pretty well.
I have accomplished next to nothing in my fern studies this summer and made but one excursion when I found anything choice. I found a little Cheilanthes which Davenport does not class with myriophylla, and like the one I found at Bartlett Springs some time ago. He has not decided what to call it yet.
Do you know that you sent me Aspidium Mohrioides? It was with those from Alaska. I sent one to Mr. Davenport and he wants me to get him a larger one. I hope you have a pile of treasures from that far-off land and some to spare to your friends.
I saw a notice of your departure in the Call, and So did not hurry to write, knowing you were still absent. I have only seen two letters in the Bulletin from you. You must have had a glorious time.
Cousin Jessie is with friends in New York and is enjoying very good health, with the exception of her old throat difficulty. She has been absent from home about two months.
I have enjoyed the fine cool days we have had here this summer on the beach. We are looking for Aunt Lena. She is coming to Sacramento on Lodge business soon. Goodbye for the present.
