John Muir. Naturalist &c Dear Sir.

While botanizing down in Arizona recently I received from friends here in Oakland an item of news at once the most astonishing and pleasing that ever was heard. “California’s most distinguished naturalist & writer was married a few days ago to the [illegible] talented & lovely daughrter of Dr Strentzel of Martinez. [The?]

[Page 2]

Dr is a Millionaire and the daughter is the only child! Now our dear little Johnny Muir is in clover. Did ever such good fortune come to a scientist before!” Arriving home I find the news confirmed and I hasten to congratulate you my dear fellow on your good luck. Now what schemes of conquest have you already planned? How soon do you start upon the circuit of the globe? Will you penetrate the [illegible] forests and seek out the heart of Africa! May we hope for lovely illustrations and graphic descriptions of [the?] Nile sources!

Really you are much to be congratulated upon your [unprecedented?] good fortune. We Californias who have followed you enraptured ever since you began boldly depicting the sublimities of Yosemite are all delighted for now we hope for still more charming and instructive labor. I hope this letter will not be considered impertinent and that you will believe me an honest though [illegible] admirer. Please present my regards to your wife who has displayed such good sense.

Your friend in the adv[illegible]ment of a love of Nature. [J. G. Lemmon?]
