GEORGE J. BRYAN DAVID S. BEASLEY, JR.PRESIDENT SECRETARY AND TREASURERThe University Society Inc.SEVENTY-EIGHT FIFTH AVENUENEW YORK CITYApril 1/08.Mr. J. Muir,Martinez, Cal.Dear Sir:-The Natural Science Association from which you purchased a copy of "The Birds of North America", is now affiliated with the University Society, publishers of the STANDARD LIBRARY OF NATURAL HISTORY, in five volumes. We feel assured that you cannot but admire the STANDARD LIBRARY OF natural history, if you are at all interested in nature and outdoor life. You will note by looking over the specimen pages [which?we] are sending you under separate cover, that the work is written in a pleasing and direct style. It is not only scientific and accurate, but graphic and entertaining. Descriptions of birds, reptiles, fishes, insects, and various animals, as well as narratives of the almost human intelligence of animals in protecting themselves and caring for their young are given in such a way as to interest every reader, young or old.The Library is illustrated almost entirely from actual photographs. Many of the pictures are large chromatic plates showing the animals, and birds in their natural colors. The cost of securing these photographs was enormmous and required years of patient labor. In some cases special expeditions armed with cameras and dry plates had to be sent to foreign lands. The paper used is a fine white coated, the type is large and clear, and both bindings are of choice design. The regular prices of the STANDARD LIBRARY OF NATURALN HISTORY are $33.00 and $39.00, for cloth and half-leather respectively, but to those who have purchased a copy of the birds of North America, we are offering a discount of 50%, making the prices $16.50 for cloth and $19.50 for half-leather, payable either cash or in instalments of $2.00 a month.IN ORDER THAT YOU MAY SEE FOR YOURSELF HOW VALUABLE THE WORK IS, WE WILL BE GLAD TO SEND YOU A COMPLETE SET FOR ONE WEEK'S EXAMINATION, DELIVERY CHARGES PREPAID. NO ADVANCE PAYMENT IS REQUIRED, AND IF AFTER EXAMINING IT YOU DO NOT WISH To SUBSCRIBE, SIMPLY RETURN IT AT OUR EXPENSE.Knowing that you would be interested in this rather unusual work, we have placed our proposition before you in this confidential manner' You cannot obtain the Library through the retail trade. The enclosed approval form will receive prompt attention. If by any chance you cannot accept our offer, you will confer a favor by informing us of your decision.Yours very truly,THE UNIVERSITY SOCITY INC[illegible]Mgr. Corres. Dept.ABL/HK.04129
