June 9th, 1910.Dear Mr. Muir,I ventured the other day -to give Mr. Sedgwick of the Atlantic the opportunity of reading your Journal of your first summer in the Sierra. As I believe he is writing you, he is very greatly taken with it, and is desirous of using several installments of it in the Atlantic as one its features for the next year.We had, of course, planned for fall publication. We are now, however, disposed, in case you agree to postpone it until spring or the following autumn, in order to give the Atlantic the right of way.We believe that its prior appearance there would be a distinct advantage not only to the Atlantic, but to the ultimate prosperity of the book as well. Please let us know your views upon the matter as soon as you can.By the way, are you not going to send us before long the illustrative material. Even though the book is to be postponed until next year, we should be glad to have the opportunity of seeing the pictures and planning the form, which cannot of course, be done until we see exactly what the illustrations are like.Faithfully yours,[illegible]John Muir, Esq.
