Berkeley, Cal.,2727 Dwight Way,January 5, 1910.My dear Mr. Muir:I have meant to write you ere this a word of greeting at the holiday season, but all three of the children have been ill with mumps and tonsilitis, and I have had my hands full with a variety of duties. Now all are well save Leonarde, who must, in the course of a few months, I fear, have a rather serious operation performed. But we hope to have him strong and well and in good spirits for it meanwhile. What a splendid fight you are making for the Hetch Hetchy! You are sure to win, and it will be a great victory for you in every way.A letter just received from John Burroughs tells me he has been ill but is now much better. We went to a Christmas party at the Keith's and Mr. Keith was in fine spirits for the occasion.Leonarde and Eloise are prancing about me in great excitement. over a butterfly which they have just brought in out of the cold -- it is all very interesting but hardly favorable for quiet letter writing. Merodine is home from the mountains for her vacation, but will return in a few weeks to finish the winter term in the little country school. She is well and happy, and has been greatly benefitted by her country life.May the new year bring to you happiness and fulfillment. I think of you very often with loving regard and appreciation of one who has lived so steadfastly close to nature and on the high places.Faithfully your friend, Charles Keeler04667
