RE HETCH HETCHY.
Berkeley, July 28, 1913.
Dear Mr. Muir:
I am sending you with this mail a considerablenumber of clippings. Most of them still relate to the periodbefore our circular reached the papers but some are beginningto arrive indicating that the circular is effective. Unfortunatelythe Hearst papers are against us, and one of them,as you will see, actually pretends that our literature issent out by the Spring Valley Water Company and some unnamedpower company. A little over a week ago I sent a very strong editorial to the New York Independent which will be in next Thursday's issue. I will send you a copy as soon as it arrives. Unfortunately I have to go up to Lake Tahoe nextSaturday for a few days. Mr. Parsons has written that hethinks it desirable to have something set up with reference to the beautiful lake fallacy. I shall ask the printer here to setit up in readiness for possible use. What we had in our previous [illegible]emphlet, I think will meet our case, unless you think otherwise.
I had a pleasant visit yesterday evening with ourmutual friend, Mrs. Marshall. She feels very hopeless aboutthe condition of things in Washington, but if we could sendout another circular to the papers exposing specificallythe arguments which certain papers are putting forward I thinkwe could arouse enough sentiment by next December to stop thispolitical raid.
With warm regards,
Sincerely yours,
[illegible]
Mr. John Muir,
Martinez,
California.
