My dear Mr. Muir-The qualifying word in this address is not merely a conventional one. As an amateur nature lover I have a profound respect for all that you have written and all that you have done to draw public attention to our natural resources and beauty spots. I wish this country had an army of 100,000 men of your spirit and appreciation to carry on the work which so imperatively needs to be done. I can only congratulate you and hope that your life will be long in order that you may do more, although more credit is due you than any other one American.
Herewith enclosed find a half-dozen copies of an article sent me by Mr. J. E. Calklns, who recently enjoyed a visit of two or three days with you. Mr. Calkins has for some 18 years been my assistant in the editorial conduct of The Davenport Democrat. He feels every word that he has written, and I am sure he will do all in his power to protect the beautiful valley which is sought by the commercial vandals.
