Dear John,

Your letter from Crocker's Station telling of your safe arrival has just come, and O how rejoiced we are to see it, though we shiver with the thought of all the dangers that surrounded you. Those terrible rattlesnakes! O dear husband, do not go again among such treacherous thickets.
We all feel so grateful to those kind people that came to meet you and made you comfortable in Hetch Hetchy.
Now that you are in a cool restful region we hope that you will grow well and strong, once more your own mountaineer self without any of the lowland worries.

Wanda and Helen are perfectly well, and now have more time to study their books, as one of the Swiss girls comes to wash & iron.
Mother was very sick for a week but is now up & around the house. David has been over 3 times to see after the fruit. Miss Kennedy and elderly Scotch lady from Edinburgh, very anxious to see John Muir, is staying with Aunt Ette.
Margaret is pretty well, & May comes often to talk to grandma who has not yet been able to go to ride.
The Firths are doing tolerably well, the two women and the children seem nice and wellbehaved.
You mention wild berries in the canon [diacritic] so I suppose you did not need the peaches we have had, but they were truly delicious, & colored finely too. Grapes promise well.
Wanda and Helen long to be with you on the mountains and in the cool fresh woods, for the weather here has been very warm most of the time. I walk with them as much as I can morning and evening but the roads are awfully dusty.
The wagon is ready to start so I cannot write more now. Do not feel worried about us, we are quietly resting.

Ever faithfully yours

Louie Muir.
