Martinez Dec. 20, 1893

My dear Mr Johnson.

You did just as you ought to do in devoting the few days you had for Chicago to Mrs Johnson & the great show. Only I expected to see you at least once more for a minute or two to press your hand again & pay my respects to Mrs Johnson. ere I took wing for home. I stayed about a week in Chicago, then went to Portage to see my mother & sisters, then to the Wisconsin University to see one of the old Professors - a friend of mine all these long years, - thence I

returned to Chicago & went home direct by way of the Santa Fee road. In Arizona our train was wrecked in a colision everybody well shaken, a few hurt but nobody killed I was not injured in the least At home I found all well excepting Mrs Strentzel, who is still quite poorly, but is getting better. I see by yesterdays paper that John P. J. has at length got an appointment - Naval Officer. If Mr Cleveland had only sent him as [illegible]ter to Queen Liliukalana & kept him there!

A committee of the Sierra club is investigating Yosemite matters, tree-cutting, the accounts of the commissioners etc. their report will probably not be handed in before May or June. Something must be done soon in forest matters if the sheep are to be kept out next year. My old friend Dr Gibbons of Alamada sent you a forest paper the other day. You can rely on his facts. & I hope you will give the article a good reading

my regards to Mrs Johnson Bud [Gilder?] - Happy New Year I'm still lost in wonder love & praise when I look back on your manifold kindnesses to your devoted friend.
