Stick

He became a man & more perplexing conundrum. Colorless in character generally neither good not bad

Fear began to creep about his heart & gradually quickened until it took entire possession racking & [thrusting] him like a helpless leaf in a whirlwind. Later however in dire distress when all hope of evading the difficulty vanished strength of will asserted itself & by [mean/mere] strength he hushed the storm of despair as if a guardian angel had come to his help.

□ No wonder so many believe the souls of men enter animals for in trials like this they show that they have human souls however they come by them.

How faint & doubtful is the sympathy we have with the vast multitude of animals our neighbors

A fine inquiring intelligence of eyes

A fine enduring trotter never tiring. With Stick found the most enduring telling fellowship I ever enjoyed with animals

Every motion & tone of voice in this time of stress had in it the very essence of humanity & could not be misunderstood anywhere

A dog as well as a man is a microcosm, & he made all the world richer for me

92

Indulged in sincere misery & so sagacious & reasonable

And so the little Alaskan dog became immortal to me

Opaque & withdrawn he now became transparent & the working of his mind such rare steadiness & independence combined with companionship could be seen & studied like a clock out of its case

Like the big gray days & rough weather

At first muttered & mumbled like a staid old man in sudden disturbance like fire in room suddenly awakened

Crying God bless my soul

Saints & ministers of Grace - help help

The value of lesson lies in the universality of its application

A window opening views mountains all animal kingdom with hopes & fears despair & joy

Literally on edge of destruction

So we were just compelled to dare & believe this was a danger prepared for us with the power to meet it

Ran with quivering speed

Know nothing of his pedigree or training

Darkness & fear of death on one side the gulf, triumphant joy & all the bright broad ○ [world] on the other
