[sudden impulses scattering unevenly & dividing into a half dozen [many] distinct bands at times & often the shepherd and his dog keeping [dogs & men] at the top of their speed to hold them within bounds. [3 or 4 miles of camp]

Mr. Delaney has gone back to the plains leaving instructions to keep [feed] the flock here or hereabouts until his return [to this camp] which he promised would not be long delayed. [When the sheep are in the corral then I am free.] How [exquisitely] fine the weather is, nothing more celestial can I conceive. How gently the winds blow, scarce can these tranquil breathings, [pulsings], be called winds. [All] They [air] seem[s] the very breath of [Divine Love caressing] Nature whispering to every created thing

living or so-called dead. Down in the June 11 camp dell there is no swaying of tree tops [at any time of day] [&] most of the time not a leaf moves. I don't remember having seen a single lily swing on its stalk though they are so tall the least breeze would [stir them into a fine] rock[ing motion] them. What grand bells these lilies have [they are], some of them big enough for children’s caps [hats]. I have been sketching [some of] them [near camp.] [I] and would fain draw every leaf of their wide shining whorls

& every curved spotted petal. More beautiful better kept gardens cannot be imagined.

Lilies so large & so fresh & perfect in every way. I have never seen in any garden however expensive or however much loved] The species is L. Pardalinum 5 to 6 feet height, leaves in [fine] whorls a foot wide flowers about 6 inches wide, bright orange, purple spotted in throat, segments revolute – a majestic plant.
