33 10550. This summit quite well timbered with Balfour of good size 2 to 3 ft [feet] dia [diameter], the bark of some smooth others v. [very] rough like some the branches all slender white & drooping like weeping willows standing beside others of same size branches all aspiring. This tree when fire killed stands perhaps for cents [centuries] because its roots are filled with rosin while contorta roots rot & the tree falls in 10 or 15 yrs [years]

34 Contorta climbs to 10000 or more here. Balfour never dwarfs. nor monticola wh [which] is common here but does not climb quite as high as Balfour. Young B. [p. Balfouriana] a handsome, a tower of brave, [verdure]. [sketch] [Large] [specimen] near camp 4 ft [feet] dia [diameter]. Flrs [flowers] just ripening. Male ab [abundant]. Sulphur yellow 1/4 in [inch] l [long], 3/16 dia [diameter] in clusters of 10 to 20? needles 1 in [inch] l [long] bright green outside pale [silvery] inside Fertile flrs [flowers] dark purp. [purple] at [first] erect 1/2 inch l [long]
