HG-ELDPDEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIORUNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEYWASHINGTON, D. C. July 7, 1904.Mr. John Muir,Martinez, Cala.My dear Muir,I have your note of June 4th written just after your return to God's country. I am sorry I could not wait in Manila for you, for we could have had a good time trotting around together, but the census was finished while you were still in the Himalayas, and I had no excuse for remaining. Isn't it a dear, quaint old town?I am in the middle of the preparation of a report upon the Philippine Census, and that will keep me here all summer. No high Sierra for me this summer. You know the Eighth International Geographic Congress is to meet here early in September. I am to be Secretary of it. Now, it will be very desirable for you, as president of one of the societies which invited the Congress, to be here to work with them, and you know there is a room at my house ready and waiting for you all the time, and so I hope you will obey the call of duty and be here early in September. We will attend the meetings of the Congress here, and then go over to New York and thence on to St. Louis.Yours very sincerely,[Illegible]03400
