Martinez, CaliforniaSeptember 13, 1913.Dear Maggie Lunam.Annie Hay's letter brought the sad news of your blessed mother's journey to the better land. The news was not unexpected, could not be after reaching the grand old age of ninety years, and I was very glad to learn that she suffered no pain, passing away in perfect peace like sleep full of God's love. I used to meet her on the winding stairway in Grandfathers old stone house when she was in the full bloom of youth. and those lang syne days were brought vividly to mind when I was writing my last book "Boyhood & Youth, a copy of which I sent you yesterday. All our family old enough to know her when we left Scotland loved her. And when I last saw her in 1893 she reminded05539
