William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

The reporter, Bailey Millard, relates the route of the explorers in some detail. Muir comments on trees with human affection, saying, "I expect to find some relations of our old friend, the sequoia, in Manchuria. They are known to exist in Japan. But I am satisfied that nowhere shall I find any trees as large as our giant redwoods." In speaking of "the hampering futilities of life," Muir remarks, "The rich man cames too heavy a pair of blankets."
