William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

""The mountains rise grandly round this curious city-the Zion of the new saints-so grandly that the city itself is hardly visible."" Muir describes the modest homes with ""gardens laid out with great simplicity, indicating love of flowers by people comparatively poor."" Of the people he comments that regardless of how the ""'peculiar practices' of Mormonism have affected ... the old Saints, ... these Mormon children, 'Utah's best crop,' seem remarkably bright and promising.""
