This book consists of selections from each of the ten volumes of The Writings. . . , no. 341, and from John of the Mountains. . . , no. 379. Arranged chronologically, each selection is introduced with comments by the editor, giving not only background material of the excerpt, but also a running account of Muir's life. The source, without specific pages, is given at the end of each selection, with the exception of the last chapter, ""The Philosophy of John Muir,"" in which many brief excerpts have been taken from various unnamed sources that we have not attempted to trace.
