William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

Although 1921 appears on the title page, the verso is rubber-stamped "Copyright Renewed 1922" in purple. We presume that at the close of 1921 there remained an inventory of the 1921 printing for marketing in the new year, when copyright renewal was required and thus a rubber stamp was used. In the 1922 printing, measurement of the lines of type on the title page indicates that the 1921 date was physically removed from the printing plate while on the verso "Copyright renewed 1922" was added in type. The binding of the 1922 printing is identical to that of the 1921. "Appleton/Century" is printed in dark green at the bottom of the spine, the only place that Appleton appears in the printing. Since The Century Company and the D. Appleton and Company did not officially merge until 1933, it is probable that there was some cooperative arrangement for these printings. We also have a 1922 printing in a variant binding: rose beige cloth with no decoration on the front cover. In addition, there is a 1922 printing on which the decoration on the front cover is in black and gilt and the decoration and lettering on the spine is in black. The volume has a dust-jacket on which the printing is identical to the binding, but done in dark green, including the decoration, and is entitled "13th Painting." On the spine are printed the title, author, The Century Co., colophon, and the statement: "Travel Observations of the Beloved Mountaineer."
