William and Maymie Kimes Annotation

With very few exceptions, the newspapers of the country are protesting against the proposed gift of the Hetch Hetchy valley to the City of San Francisco for a water supply. Quoting from the hearing of the Public Lands Committee, Muir shows that the officials of San Francisco know they can secure a water supply elsewhere, but will have to pay for it. Muir continues, "Entirely apart from whether this plan is not a piece of vandalism, the cool effrontery of San Francisco is sufficient for unmitigated condemnation." Muir ends his comments urging citizens to protest by writing to their senators.
