In 1849, Muir's father Daniel moved the family from Scotland to the prairies of Wisconsin. The family built and lived in three different homes near Portage, Wisconsin. The first was the "The Burr-Oak Shanty, Wisconsin, Our First American Home." (John Muir Papers, Wisconsin Historic Houses, etc.)
