Abstract/Artist Statement
Growing up in Pakistan, the society I was raised in is completely different than that of the west, where I have spent most of my adulthood. The importance of education within a western society is immense, compared to the one I was raised in. The difference was visible to me as an immigrant, hence I decided to research this topic. For my research, I decided to focus upon the reasons as to why students (male) not pursue higher education in my hometown of Sheikhupura. For this, I interned at a local high-school NurPur Public School as an after-school program incharge. Through my research, I hope to better understand my society and what it is required in order to transform this society into something better. Upon collecting data from students, I was able to gather that many students found the education system to be unreliable. Unlike other countries, the education system of Pakistan doesn’t guarantee much in return. Due to the economic troubles, gender in-equality and corruption, students, depending on access to resources, either turn towards international studies or they just exit the education system as a whole. Basically, the education system of the country as a whole is in great need of reform. However, the challenges remain in a vast variety. From corrupt officials, to the poor infrastructure of schools & colleges, to lack of monetary funding, the system needs immediate attention. The list of issues listed in the studies are still present, however due the lack of research, recent trends haven’t been explored. Based on my research, many middle and highschool students are now more open to the idea of being a part of the workforce, rather than attending school, this is also visible in the data I have collected.
